Harriet Tubman and Cape May

Harriet Tubman was enslaved near Cape May right on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. She worked in the area for about twenty-seven years when the slaveowner, Edward Brodess, passed away. His widow then began making plans to sell the slaves elsewhere, including Harriet Tubman. However, Tubman wanted to control her own destiny. It was then that she fled the area, seeking freedom in Philadelphia.

Tubman realized how desperately she needed her friends and family when she arrived. So, she then began working, saving money to cover the expenses to make the trek. In December 1850, Tubman made her first rescue—her niece, Kessiah Bowley, and her two younger children, located in the Deep South. They were at risk of being sold off, and Tubman crafted a plan to save them.

Soon, Tubman began making more excursions to free more slaves. That is what started the Underground Railroad and established Harriet Tubman as an important historical figure. Soon after, in December of 1851, Tubman made her way back to the Eastern Shore to save eleven more people. Here, she began more work in Cape May to rescue even more slaves in Maryland. In all, Tubman returned to the area about thirteen times.
